Workout Accessories

As I’m sure you’ve gathered from all of my past running posts, I really enjoy working out. And yes, I’ll always enjoy running but I also enjoy body pump, Pilates, yoga, core classes and even hiking, and water and snow skiing. Whether I’m hopping on the elliptical for 30 minutes or taking a body pump class at my gym, a good sweat session is good, not only for the body, but for the mind and soul.

I recently signed up for my second half marathon. Yep, I’m doing it again! This time at Disney World!!! I am beyond excited to combine two of my favorite things! Plus, what better excuse to go back to Disney World?! Needless to say, this is the inspiration for this post. Obviously different types of workouts require different types of gear and accessories, but today I’m going to share with you some of my personal faves.

1. Yurbuds
No, this is not a typo. Yurbuds are the world’s best ear buds, in my opinion. They are a little pricey, ranging anywhere from $30 to $60 (for the type I like), but they are oh so worth it. The company was founded by a triathlete and a marathoner, who, I’m sure, are very aware of ear bud issues. They can be uncomfortable, fall out, etc. They designed the shape of Yurbuds specifically for athletes and it allows them to sort of lock into you ears and not fall out, even with all the bouncing around while you’re running. Yurbuds are also sweat proof! I’ve always had trouble finding earbuds I liked until my dad suggested these to me. Yurbuds definitely take the cake in the ear bud category!

Shout out to my Nona and Grandpa for my current aqua ‘Inspire Pro for Women’ Yurbuds that I got for my birthday! Tate ate my old pink ones the week after my half marathon. I guess he was done with me leaving him to go run all of the time! Haha!

2. Shoe Insoles
Once I committed to my first half marathon last spring, I knew I needed to get the best running shoes. Everyone has different types of shoes they prefer for running, my personal favorites being Asics, but even more important than the shoes are the insoles.

When I decided to invest in some good running shoes, I went to a local running shop called Red Coyote. They have this really cool set up where they have you run barefoot (it was so weird) on a treadmill and they videoed your feet from behind. Then, you get off and they slow down the video and analyze how your feet are hitting the treadmill while you run. This is when I discovered that I slightly roll my arches while running. Without the proper insoles, running could become very painful, especially on my knees and ankles. Early on in my training for my first half, I accidentally wore my old running shoes (purchased before my Red Coyote experience) that did not have my insoles. I only ran 4 miles in the old shoes, but wow did I notice a huge difference! By the end, my knees were really hurting, which rarely happens with my insoles. So, for obvious reasons, I am now a big believer in making sure you have the proper support you need in a shoe.

My insoles are ‘Berry’ made by Super Feet, but I’m sure you could find some at any running store.

IMG_0126.PNG

Another random running shoe tip that I learned at Red Coyote is to buy your running shoes a half size bigger. This is because when you run, especially longer distances, your feet expand. I can only imagine all of the blisters that could be caused by a smaller shoe!

3. Apparel
This one I feel like I can’t classify as a necessity, however I find that I am so much more excited and motivated to workout when I have cute workout clothes. Silly, I know, but it’s true! I used to always work out in my “college uniform,” aka Nike tempo running shorts and oversized tshirts, but I’ve learned that the softer and lighter materials used for workout clothes really make you more comfortable while working out.

There is a Nike outlet not too far down the road, so I first took my search for workout apparel there. I found a few things but I didn’t go crazy because I realized that even at an outlet store, workout clothes can add up quickly! I got by for quite a while, only adding a few tops and leggings to my workout wardrobe.

This summer, Andrew told me about a company called Fabletics. It is a monthly subscription as well as an online store for workout apparel. Kate Hudson is one of the co-founders. After researching it further, I decided to sign up. The difference between Fabletics and other monthly subscriptions is that you don’t just pay a flat rate and then they send you whatever. Fabletics has you take a quiz when you sign up about what types of workouts you do, etc. and then they give you outfit options each month. On the 1st of the month, you receive an email with your outfit options (along with their prices) for that month. The outfits tend to run about $50 each. You make your selection by the 5th of the month, or you can opt out of that month. If you opt out, you do not pay. This is what enticed me to sign up. I think it’s cool, but I probably don’t need a new $50 outfit each month. But, knowing I can keep my membership and just opt out from time to time is really nice.

So far, I’ve been nothing but pleased with my outfits. The first one fit perfectly, and I love it! It was only $30 because when you join, the first one is half off! You can’t beat $30 for a bra, leggings AND a cute workout top!

My 1st Fabletics outfit.

The next one’s top and bra were a little big, so I just sent them back for a smaller size, no extra charge to me. It was super easy and I had my replacements in no time!

My 2nd Fabletics outfit.

One of my friends did say that they tend to run out of colors and sizes pretty quickly and since they do a new line each month, they don’t replenish their stock. So, if you decide to join, I’d recommend picking your outfit as soon as you get your email on the 1st.

If you have any questions about any of my suggestions, don’t hesitate to ask!

I promise, none of these companies paid me to say any of this. (I wish!) These are completely my personal opinions that I formed after using all of these products.

Why I love my CSA

You may have picked up on this by now, but I love food! Especially healthy food! Maybe I’m weird, but I honestly love fruits and vegetables and I find that I tend to feel gross when I’m not getting enough fresh produce in my diet. This leads me to share my favorite place to get fresh produce: a local CSA that I belong to.

CSA stands for community supported agriculture. [Shout out to my plant-loving (and studying) friend Derek, who explained a lot of this to me when I was contemplating joining!] A lot of local farms have CSA programs where you pay a certain amount and get whatever produce they have available at the time. They have all sorts of different options, depending on what works best for you. The CSA I belong to, has weekly or every other week options and then you can pay per basket or quarterly. I even have the option to pay a few dollars extra and they’ll bring my basket to my work so that I don’t have to go pick it up! Since I mostly just cook for myself, I do the every other week option. Every week would be wayyy too much food for only me! I love my produce, but I’d have trouble eating it fast enough… sometimes even my every other week basket is a challenge to eat before it goes bad.

I admit, sometimes I have to text Derek pictures to ask what things are... These are beets!

I admit, sometimes I have to text Derek pictures to ask what things are… These are beets!

The CSA I belong to is called Guilford Gardens and is located in NW Oklahoma City. I found out about it through my mom and some family friends, who have belonged to it for several years now. There are also other CSA options in and around Oklahoma City, but I went with Guilford Gardens since I was familiar with them. I also like that Guilford Gardens is organic. I’m not normally a nut about only eating organic, but I don’t think it hurts to go without all that pesticide from time to time. Like produce you’d find at a farmer’s market (which is also wayyyy better than the grocery store), CSA produce is so fresh and flavorful! There is something to be said for produce that gets to ripen fully on the vine rather than being sprayed with something to make it reach the desired ripeness. I’m not saying all grocery stores do this, but I’m pretty sure a lot do.

I also love the CSA because it’s a great way to try other veggies than you may normally be a little hesitant to buy. It also gives you a great variety! I’ve belonged to Guilford Gardens since the spring, I think March or April-ish, and I’ve already gotten so many different things! Some of them have included tomatoes, kale, acorn squash, swiss chard, spinach, pea shoots, cucumbers, basil, red/new potatoes, zucchini, summer squash, carrots, onions, corn, and so much more! In the colder months, when not as much is available, they make soups and cornbread to include in the baskets. I’ve also gotten eggs and pesto! In past years, my mom said that they sometimes have gotten things like blueberries from other local farms to include in their baskets.

I honestly cannot say enough about how delicious this fresh produce is! Last night I had some beets, corn on the cob and new potatoes from last week’s basket. The corn was sweeter than any other corn I’ve ever had! I roasted the beets and potatoes with some carrots and onions I already had in my fridge. I just tossed them in olive oil with a little sprinkle of Herbes de Provence and YUM! The potatoes are so buttery they melt in your mouth. The beets are something that I probably wouldn’t have bought on my own, but they were pretty tasty too!

Last night's corn on the cob.

Here are the roasted beets and potatoes from last week's basket (with carrots & onions).

Lastly, my favorite thing about the CSA is that it’s local. I think it’s so important to support your local economy. One of the things I love about Oklahoma City is how many local restaurants and shops there are. It seems like almost every month a few more pop up! Joining a CSA is an awesome way to support a local farm. Why wouldn’t you want to buy food that was grown just down the street?!

This summer squash that I used for margarita pizza boats was from the CSA.

I made this Mediterranean Vegetable Salad with cucumbers and heirloom tomatoes from the CSA too!

The Perfect Bridal Shower

IMG_6086

Last weekend two of my dear friends and I threw one of our best friends a bridal shower. This post was, in fact, requested by the bride to be, but let’s  be honest, I would’ve posted about it anyway. 🙂

I’ve attended countless wedding showers, but this was the first one I hosted and it was so much fun! I look forward to all of my future shower-throwing opportunities.

Now, I’ll take you through the planning process.

Step 1: Pick a date.

After determining the co-hostess(es), picking a date for the shower is the priority. Obviously the bride’s availability is the most important, but then you must consider the schedules of the guests. We went with Memorial Day weekend, which we knew could hurt us a little if people had plans, but for us, it worked well because some out-of-town guests were able to make it.

Along with choosing a date, comes choosing a location. Sometimes showers can be hosted at restaurants, or tea rooms in like a private room, but we elected to hold the shower at my parents’ house. You can’t beat free! Also, this way, we wouldn’t have to transport a bunch of stuff, and we could decorate however we wanted.

Step 2: Design and order invitations.

Invitations to a shower are typically sent out about a month in advance. Some things to take into consideration are the time it takes to design, proof, order and address the invitations. We decided to throw the shower just about 6 weeks prior to the date we selected, so we were a little crunched for time. When considering invitation options, we knew we wanted something pretty, yet classy. Evites are a nice option for some, but I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to a beautiful card stock invitation — I just can’t resist them! Well, and I love all things mail and post office related, but that’s another story. Another great option for invitations is Etsy! There are some beautiful invitations available on Etsy, but because of timing, we couldn’t go that route.

Make sure to get the guest list from the bride before ordering invitations because you need to know how many to order.

I knew of a couple of local stationary shops, so I decided to swing by on my lunch break. I ended up getting them from a place called No Regrets in Oklahoma City (which I would HIGHLY recommend). The staff was fabulous to work with and they got the invitations printed quickly since we were in a time crunch. It did take a little longer than originally anticipated, but just because we made some edits to the proof we were sent.

We wanted everything to be perfect for the shower and really nice, but we also didn’t want to go broke in the process (remember we are only 20-somethings and definitely not rollin’ in the dough), so we chose an invitation that was a standard mailing size and not too heavy of a paper, so that we didn’t have to pay additional postage. Depending on how many invitations are sent, postage can add up! I could’ve had the guests’ names and addresses printed on the envelopes as well, but it costed more and I didn’t have all of the addresses when I was placing the order, so I just opted to hand write them. This is where it was unfortunate (for me) that the other 2 hostesses lived in different cities. I did elect to have my return address printed on the back flap of the envelopes, mostly because it was less for me to write and saved some time as well.

I couldn’t have been more pleased with how the invitations turned out. Even though I don’t have the world’s best handwriting, I think the addresses turned out pretty well too! I will admit, they didn’t go in the mail until about 3 or 3 1/2 weeks prior.

The invitations! Excuse the smudges - I had to get rid of some contact info for privacy purposes.

3. Plan and/or order the food.

At first, we considered some local catering options for the food. This would have been the easy option, but also probably a little pricier. After some brainstorming and Pinterest-browsing, we decided to just make the food ourselves.

The shower was at 2:00pm, so we didn’t need to serve a meal, but we definitely needed to have some food, a dessert, and drinks. We decided on the following menu.

  • Chicken Salad on Rolls
  • Fruit Salad
  • Hummus with Pita Chips
  • Cheese Cubes & Crackers
  • Artichoke Dip & Crackers
  • Petit Fours
  • Mimosa Bar
  • Water with Pineapple & Strawberries

{The Chicken Salad and Artichoke Dip recipes will be making their blog debuts sooner than later.}

Personally, I would always suggest ordering or planning a little more food if you’re worried about the amount, because there’s nothing worse than a party that runs out of food. But, I love food, so I’m sure you’re not shocked by this. AND we definitely didn’t come anywhere close to running out, but who doesn’t love some leftover fruit and chicken salad.

We bought the food on Friday evening, when one of the other hostesses got into town, and then prepared everything on Saturday morning. Though it took a little longer than anticipated and we ended up rushing a bit at the last minute, the food prep was really quite simple. For the fruit salad, we cut up watermelon, honeydew, cantaloupe, pineapple, strawberries and threw in some grapes. It was beautiful in a big glass bowl. The hummus, crackers, pita chips, mimosa bar supplies (juice and champagne) and petit fours were store bought, so no prep there. I will take a second to give a shout out to the bakery I ordered the petit fours from: Sweete Memories in Oklahoma City. They turned out so pretty, and were also extremely yummy. I may have had more than one… We also bought blocks of cheese and then cut them into cubes ourselves. Like I mentioned, I made the artichoke dip and the chicken salad, but we did purchase the rolls for the chicken salad. For the water, we just added some freshly cut pineapple and strawberries, and it tasted delicious!

4. Plan the decor.

One of the hostesses, luckily for the other two of us, is awesome at decorating and displaying things. She brought some dishes with her, and the other hostess brought some champagne glasses and McKenzie Childs platters she borrowed from a friend. We ended up with more than enough dishes, and the food table turned out perfectly.

The spread.

One thing we did, that isn’t necessary, per se, but I thought really made everything look nice, was order flower arrangements. We got one larger and two smaller arrangements from an amazing and relatively new florist in Oklahoma City – Dutch. They were wonderful to work with, and I couldn’t have been more pleased with the flowers. Not to mention, that flowers can get quite pricey, but Dutch was really pretty reasonable!

The big arrangement. (Not the best pic but you get the idea..)

The decor-savy hostess also brought this super cute ribbon garland that she used at a bachelorette party that she hosted recently. We draped it behind the present table that was displayed in the entry way. The table also had a white lacey tablecloth with a gold satin runner bunched up nicely to add some texture. One of the smaller flower arrangements was also on the gift table. {I’m trying my best to be descriptive, because we didn’t actually get a picture of the gift table, which I’m sad about because it looked great!}

5. The shower gift.

I’m not really sure what’s standard when it comes to the shower gift from the hostess(es), but both of the other hostesses and myself decided to go in together on a gift for the bride. I normally am one who always always always buys bridal shower and wedding gifts from registries because I figure if they went to the effort to choose those items, they probably really want/need them, but this time we did not. We bought the bride a couple of McKenzie Childs serving dishes. I think this was perfect, because the bride LOVES to entertain, and was surprised at the same time! Plus, you can’t really go wrong with something McKenzie Childs… Shout out to a fellow Chi Omega who makes beautiful dishes (and more)!

In the end, I think the shower ended up pretty much being the perfect bridal shower, granted, I’m biased. But, I did enjoy every step of the planning and shower-throwing process! Hopefully our methods and tips come in handy in all of your future shower hosting endeavors!

My latest obsessions…

Today, I’ve decided to share some of my current obsessions because I think they’re so great that you should enjoy and obsess over them too! (And as you’re probably figuring out, I really love lists.)

1. Vaseline Lip Therapy Cocoa Butter

vaseline lip therapy

All year-round, but especially in the winter months, I feel like I can’t put on enough chapstick. I’ve tried all different types of lip moisturizers and this is the first one that I feel like actually helps treat my [extremely] chapped lips. I LOVE IT. It is kind of hard to find, though. I looked at several drug stores and finally found it at Walmart in the lotion aisle right next to the big tub of regular vaseline. It is small, but you don’t need to use much! I think they had a plain version as well, but I opted for the cocoa butter one.

2. Unite Luxury Argan Oil

Unite Luxury Argan Oil

My awesome hair girl, Bethany Gunn at Revel Eight Salon & Spa, recommended this to me and I’m obsessed. I use it every day. I know Moroccan Oil has been huge recently, and I admit, I’ve never tried it, but this stuff rocks! Revel Eight sells everything made by Unite, but I’m sure you could also find this online. I have fine hair, so I just use one pump and it really helps nourish and protect my hair, while preventing frizz and decreasing blow dry time. Sounds crazy, but it really works! If you have some left over on your hands after applying, I like to rub it all over my body. That’s right, it’s great for your skin too! This is a little bit of a splurge, but (for me) it lasts quite a while! Obviously, this depends on how much you use.

Side note: If you are in the Oklahoma City area, you need to check out Revel Eight and Bethany Gunn! You can call the salon to make an appointment with Bethany.

3. Smoothies

How To - smoothies

I used to not love smoothies because I’m weird about textures and I don’t like things that are too mushy or creamy. But, recently I decided to give them another chance and I’m so glad I did! Smoothies are a great way to get some more fruit and protein into your diet! I love just eating raw fruit too, but sometimes fresh produce can be expensive, so the frozen fruit is a better option (unsweetened, of course). Plus, I hate to admit it, but sometimes I can’t eat all of the produce I buy before it goes bad, so freezing it is a way to make it last longer. (Lately, I buy the bag of bananas that the grocery story sells for really cheap because they’re either “bad” or about to go bad, and then peel them and freeze them in ziplocs until I’m ready to use them. They last me forever! Last time I got 17 bananas for under $2.50!!!) Another great thing about smoothies is you can sneak in some extra veggies and you won’t even have to taste them! I happen to enjoy spinach anyway, but when you add it to smoothies you don’t really taste it, so if it’s not your thing, this is great for you! I also like to add things like chia seeds, protein powder, greek yogurt, and almond milk to my smoothies. There are a ton of great recipes on pinterest, but honestly I don’t really use recipes. I just use what I have, and I haven’t had a bad one yet! I think the above diagram is helpful for beginner smoothie makers.

4. Disney World

mickeyandminnie

I have never been to Disney World. When I was little, we lived in California, so I have been to Disneyland a few times, but never Disney World. Disney was pretty much my childhood. I feel like I grew up with Disney. My mom says that when I was little, my siblings and I would sit and watch the movies over and over again for hours and hours and days and days. Certain movies even remind me of certain times, kind of like music can. I remember watching Beauty and the Beast a ton when my sister was in the hospital after kidney surgery because it had just come out on VHS. Even though most people think of Disney as for kids, I’m still a big fan of Disney! I saw Frozen twice in theaters recently and listen to the sound track pretty regularly on Spotify at work.

One of my favorite things about being an adult is traveling. Whenever I want (assuming I can get off work), I can go wherever I want with whoever I want, obviously assuming I can afford it. I love traveling so much that I save and save to be able to do it as often as possible! Soooo you can imagine how excited I am that three weeks from today I will be on my way to the most magical place on earth! Yes, I’m talking about Disney World. This ended up being kind of a last minute trip, so I’ve had to learn a ton about all things Disney World pretty quickly. There are so many things to know – from the resorts, to the dining, to park tickets and fast passes, the list goes on and on! Because I’m a little bit nuts when it comes to planning, I quickly decided which park I would be going to on each day and then got reservations at some of the best (according to my research) restaurants. Even though I haven’t set foot at Disney World, all of the planning has already got me scheming about how to go back! RunDisney may be in my future… You can definitely expect to hear more about my trip upon my return!

I hope you enjoyed my latest obsessions! Happy Friday!!!

Gone in 60 Seconds… Literally

This dip’s name says it all — Gone in 60 Seconds. It will literally be gone in 60 seconds when you serve it at your next party or gathering.

I first learned this recipe when I was working at a local shop called The Gourmet Gallery. They have recipe cards to go with almost every product they sell and this was one of them. The Gone in 60 Seconds recipe was paired with The Prairie Gypsies’ Red Hot Lover Pepper Jam. This recipe calls for any pepper jelly, but I’d highly suggest Red Hot Lover.

red hot lovers

The Prairie Gypsies is a local company that makes jellys, jams, dressings and more. Their products are sold nationwide but they also have a store front in Oklahoma City where you can also buy delicious premade meals and other goodies. You can also purchase their products on their website. I’ve never had anything from The Prairie Gypsies that I didn’t love!

Enough with the chit chat. Here’s the recipe. I realize it may sound a little weird, but go ahead and give it a try. I promise you won’t regret it!

Ingredients:

1 (8oz) package of cream cheese {I prefer fat free, but to each his own.}
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup chopped green onions {Use all of it — the white AND green parts.}
1 jar of pepper jelly/jam {Red Hot Lover}
Crackers

Directions:

Let the cream cheese soften a little by sitting it out for a few minutes at room temperature before you’re ready to make the dip.
Combine all of the ingredients except for the pepper jelly in a bowl. You don’t want to use a food processor here  because this dip is best with various textures. I think it works best to stir it all together using a spoon or a rubber spatula.
You can shape the dip by putting it on some syran wrap and molding it into either a log, a ball or a patty shape. I generally do a patty shape.
Next, throw the syran-wrapped dip into the fridge until you’re ready to serve it. When ready, take the syran wrap off, place the dip on a platter, pour the pepper jelly over the top and set it out with some crackers and a spreader.
Last, all that’s left to do is enjoy! But, like I mentioned, you’d better hurry because it won’t last long!
